Friday 9 November 2012

This afternoon the weather was much the same as yesterday, mainly cloudy with a few sunny spells, but despite there being less disturbance today, there was very little to report on my patch.

The lakes had 6 MALLARD and 4 MOORHEN present and only a solitary COAL TIT broke the silence in the Scrubby Woods. Only one MEADOW PIPIT was seen at the Tree Nursery, where a pair of KESTRELS were seen mating on the overhead telephone lines. The Greenhouse Grounds had far fewer birds than of recent visits, the mixed flock of LESSER REDPOLL, SISKIN, and GOLDFINCH had dwindled to two to three of each species. REDWING and FIELDFARE were more evident today though, with small numbers of calling birds flying over every few minutes.

That's about it for today, I had hoped for a Goose of some description, or a Stock Dove, even maybe a Common Gull, as these are the most likely candidates left to add to the November tally, but not a sniff of any of them - maybe tomorrow mornings full patch walk will turn something up  :-)

Just one photo was taken today, a desperate few minutes were spent in my garden shed as the last few rays of sunshine crept below the garden wall.  :-)
GOLDFINCH one of just two seen at the feeders all week. Still no Greenfinch though, if none are seen tomorrow this will be the first week in 12 years of watching the garden that none have been recorded  :-(

Greenfinches are difficult in gardens now it seems, certainly around here any way. I did have 8 at the castle yesterday. Nice Goldfinch pic.

I need to catch up on the status of the Greenfinch Warren, but I find it difficult to remember the last time I saw a double figure of them and certainly not an every day bird anymore it seems.

Lovely Goldfinch photo Warren :-) One of our most exotic looking and beautiful garden birds I think.
